Research and Planning October 2010

By now, you should have completed your initial research into existing products (a minimum of 3 covers, 3 contents pages and 3 double page spreads), and should have begun further research, into genres, images, titles etc.

To continue with your research and move towards the planning the satge you should work through the list below. You do not need to complete all of the tasks, but the more work that you do, the more authentic your project will be.

You should consider:

  • Genre research - eg a collage of covers, considering colours, layouts, common image types etc.

  • Cover shot research - collect a number of different shot types and consider which is effective for your project and why.

  • Surveys - pick four covers that you like and survey the class / school as to which they like and why. Create and post graphs to show your findings.

  • Surveys 2 - create a simple questionairre, considering what buyers look for in a magazine, what attracts them to make a purchase, how much they spend etc...

  • Layouts / Font / Colour research - these three are crucial for making an authentic product. You should collect examples for each and survey the class to find which they think work well for your genre (use http://www.dafont.com/ as a starting point).

  • Titles - You'll need a catchy title that fits with your genre and is original. You'll need to come up with several and survey to find out which is most effective.

This will then lead to you constructing your Preliminary products. We'll be going through this at the end of next week.
