BHS Year 12 Foundation Portfolio

Welcome to the Biddulph High School Media Studies Department! This is the blog for the Foundation Portfolio (G321), the coursework unit for AS Media Studies. On this page you will find advice on how to complete your project and ideas on how to set up and customise your blog.

Check-list for your project...

A good project will be expected to include...

Research:

  • Analysis of existing products (covers, contents, spreads, film openings, stills, photogrpahs). These can be general to begin with, but should become focused towards the style of product you wish to produce. You could describe some as 'inspiration'.
  • Audience surveys: This includes questionnaires (paper or online), forum / message boards, focus groups and feedback on your mock-ups / products.

Planning:

  • For print - a number of mock-ups for cover, contents and spread, including your own images. Sample photos, articles, fonts, layouts etc.
  • For film - storyboards (simple and more advanced) and animatics. Experimentation with titles, location shots, mise-en-scene planning.
  • Both projects will require some sort of schedule, to show you have organised your time and actors / equipment.

Products:

  • Your final products will need to be published on your blog. Accompanying each post should be a short explanation of what you have done. To get the best marks, you then need to seek feedback (using the comments function if required) from your peers, and then implement any necessary changes. This will then result in a final draft which can be evaluated in your evaluation.
  • For film students, it's a good idea to create another draft with a recorded audio commentary that explains your video. This can be included as an extra on your dvd.

Evaluation:

  • The evaluation consists of your response to 7 questions. You can write your reponse to each question and simply post it on your blog. It will then be checked after the deadline, following which any necessary changes can be made. A more innovative approach (and one which could generate more marks) would be to post your thoughts on each of the questions on you blog, and then record and post a 'video diary' of yourself discussing your views. A further option would be to create a simple PowerPoint, save it to slideshare.net and link to it from your blog.
